Volunteering is becoming increasingly popular. More people are willing to give up their time for a good cause, such as a charity or an organisation that works within their community.
But why is this?
There are a growing number or organisations on the internet involved in the process of matching people to volunteer work that suits them. The more organisations there are taking part in this process, the more opportunities there are for people interested in this kind of work. And more options for budding volunteers means it's far more likely their interest will result in them doing valuable work for an organisation.
According to Google's keyword tool, approximately 14,800 people search for "volunteer" each month and there are roughly 135,000 searches globally. 27,100 searches are made in the UK each month for "volunteering" and 49,500 globally. These are exact figures and don't include using these keywords as part of a phrase. Searches using the keyword "volunteer", within their search phrase, reaches roughly 5,000,000 globally each month.
Due to these high numbers, there are plenty of organisations looking for a piece of this pie and are looking to get involved with the websites on the first page of Google for these phrases. If a website has great Google visibility, then they're sure to be getting very high traffic, which means if your organisation is somewhere on these sites, or even better, if your organisation's volunteer opportunity is featured on a page ranked in Google for one of these terms, you're certain to be recruiting plenty of candidates.
This results in a positive circular reaction. Because of these organisations improving their opportunities, or in other words, increasing the value of their content, to help maintain their high visibility in Google, people know that a Google search will retrieve great results, which in turn increases the chances of people turning to Google when they're looking for volunteer work.
Another big factor responsible for the increase in volunteer activity is the changes in the job market. With an increasing work force not being matched by the amount of jobs available, people are more likely to take on volunteering as either or both a way of making something of their time while they're jobless and improving their employability.
Donating your time to a good cause is a fantastic thing to add to your cv, it shows a that you can work for something other than money and that you are likely to be an ethical, trustworthy employee.
